What is Home Health Care?

Home health care is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home for an illness or injury. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).

Who is Eligible for Home Health Care?

  • You must be under the care of a doctor, and you must be getting services under a plan of care created and reviewed regularly by a doctor.
  • You must need, and a doctor must certify that you need, one or more of these:

  1. You must be under the care of a doctor, and you must be getting services under a plan of care created and reviewed regularly by a doctor.
  2. Physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or continued occupational therapy services. These services are covered only when the services are specific, safe and an effective treatment for your condition. The amount, frequency and time period of the services needs to be reasonable, and they need to be complex or only qualified therapists can do them safely and effectively. To be eligible, either: 1) your condition must be expected to improve in a reasonable and generally predictable period of time, or 2) you need a skilled therapist to safely and effectively make a maintenance program for your condition, or 3) you need a skilled therapist to safely and effectively do maintenance therapy for your condition.

  • You must be homebound, and a doctor must certify that you're homebound.

What is Homebound Means?

Home Health is for people who are homebound, but this doesn’t mean you can’t leave home. It means that leaving home would require a lot effort. It usually means that you need help from someone else and perhaps a wheelchair or walker to leave home. Patients may leave home for medical treatment, and occasionally for non-medical things, such as attending church, trip to the barber or beauty salon or family events like wedding or birthday party and still qualify for Home Health.

Who Pays for Home Health Care?

Most Americans over the age of 65 are eligible to receive federal Medicare coverage, which may then be used to pay for home health care services but it should follow Medicare requirements. If you don't qualify for Medicare, you might be able to get home health care covered by a private insurance plan. Many insurers offer a cost-sharing provision for professional in-home care for seniors.

Who Pays for Supplies and Equipment?

If the patient has Medicare, it usually covers 80% for medically necessary durable medical equipment. Medical supplies like wound care dressings are paid as long as they are ordered as part of your care.

How Long I will Receive Home Health Care?

You can continue to receive home health care for as long as you are qualified. Your doctor will determine the number of visits you receive based on your needs and health status.
